Note of the Week

This is the result of what we were talking about last week!

Unlike in any of our visualizers, this one uses MIDI data exported from FL Studio instead of directly tampering with the audio amplitudes (levels). With MIDI, we can have some cool features such as precise percussion hits, or animations related to note's pitch and velocity. As you see in the video, the particle generation rate and brightness vary from each note's velocity. The only problem we have currently is when multiple notes are in effect in one frame. After trying to program the After Effects expressions, we can deal with the case when multiple notes are triggered (e.g. chords). Then, what about when a note is triggered while another note is being held (think guitar arpeggio)? It happened within this video, too, when an arpeggio occurs in the middle and the particle origin flickers to the left. Even if we manage to cover that case with expressions, it would be too computationally expensive and add too much render time to the project. That is because of how expressions work.

Well, we will stop here since this conversation gets technical really fast. Anyway, if you are interested and have any questions, feel free to ask in this post.

Note: Our manager made that piano short back a few months ago.

"Off topic, I also discovered TiddlyWiki this week and found that it can be very useful for writing my game designs! I would like to spend this week for experimenting with it. I'll open a new post for the next renovation note to talk about this. Oh! And I'm still doing fine on the piano lessons. Still spend 1-2 hours practicing every day. :D" — The Manager

Lot of work involved with this... interesting to follow the progress. Was thinking the music seemed highly WIP until... it really started. Uplifting tune for a post full of promise.

Thanks for taking the time here. I've been doing these things for 6 months now so it's indeed a lot of work. If it weren't for my love for it, I would've just quit this for my current job. For the music, there are barely any composition done outside of that loop atm. Intended to finish the whole thing within 2 weeks.

Will be fun to see/hear! Keep up that good fight! Fun to stumble upon people working with such passion.
